Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. and a leading global developer, owner, and operator of solar and energy storage assets, has commenced commercial operations at the Villameca Project in the Region of Castilla y León, Spain. The Villameca solar project is a solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with an installed capacity of 200 MWp and is expected to produce approximately 359,172 MWh of clean electricity annually. Its anticipated generation is sufficient to supply more than 100,000 homes while preventing approximately 57,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year.
This reduction is equivalent to removing more than 12,000 internal combustion vehicles from the road. The project adds to Recurrent Energy’s expanding portfolio in Spain, following the recent inauguration of the 426 MWp Rey Solar Project in Andalucía. Another development, the 315 MWp Tordesillas Project in Castilla y León, is expected to be connected later this year. With these three projects, the company expects its total operational solar capacity in Spain to reach approximately 1 GW by year-end.
Dylan Marx, CEO of Recurrent Energy, said, “The achievement of commercial operation at Villameca marks an important milestone for Recurrent Energy and strengthens our position in Europe. As we continue to grow our renewable energy portfolio, we remain committed to creating lasting value in the communities where we operate. We are particularly proud of this project’s impact and the high level of social and biodiversity commitments achieved throughout its development.”
Sustainability Measures and Community Development
The Villameca solar project received UNEF’s Seal of Excellence during its permitting and construction phases. The recognition acknowledges that the plant was designed and developed in line with high sustainability standards. Beyond electricity generation, the project incorporates community development initiatives through Recurrent Energy’s Community CaRE program. These efforts support local development through community facilities, educational improvements, and social initiatives.
Biodiversity protection is another element of the project’s development approach. Measures include habitat restoration, native vegetation planting and initiatives designed to safeguard local wildlife. These provisions include nesting structures, bat boxes, and insect hotels, reflecting the project’s commitments to environmental protection and biodiversity throughout its development. The combination of community-focused initiatives and ecological measures forms part of the sustainability commitments associated with the solar facility. The project’s recognition by UNEF also highlights the sustainability standards applied during its development and construction.
Battery Storage Plans to Support Decarbonization
The Villameca solar project is expected to be hybridized with battery energy storage systems, an addition intended to further support decarbonization efforts and enhance grid stability. This planned integration forms part of Recurrent Energy’s wider involvement in hybrid renewable energy developments across Europe. The company recently announced the grid connection of Montalto La Viola, one of Italy’s first solar-plus-storage hybrid projects. That development further strengthens Recurrent Energy’s expertise in developing and delivering hybrid renewable energy projects across Europe.
With Villameca now operating commercially and battery storage integration anticipated, the project represents another addition to the company’s Spanish solar portfolio. Its expected contribution to clean electricity generation, emissions avoidance and local sustainability initiatives complements the company’s ongoing renewable energy development activities in the region.
