China-based Sinohydro has awarded a contract worth nearly €58m to French Alstom for electro-mechanical equipment delivery and technical services for the 600MW Karuma Hydropower Project in Uganda.
Under the terms of the contract, Alstom will supply six 100MW Francis turbine-generator sets and related equipment for the facility.
The facility is located along the River Nile in the districts of Kiryadongo and Oyam. It is claimed to be the largest power producing plant in the African country.

Equipment design, manufacturing, supervision of the installation process, commissioning of the turbines and their testing will be done by Alstom Hydro China (AHC). The firm will also offer site services for the project.
Once operational, the 600MW facility will be able to meet 40% of the country’s power requirements.

The French manufacturer is one of the chief suppliers for hydropower generation equipment and systems globally. Its present portfolio covers more than 25% of the total installed hydropower capacity worldwide.
