Siemens Gamesa secures 5.X wind turbine supply contract in UK

AI Summary

Siemens Gamesa has secured a contract to supply 5.X turbines for Energiekontor UK’s Longhill Burn wind farm near Edinburgh, UK.

Under the contract, the company will supply and install its SG 5.8-155 turbines at the subsidy-free 50MW wind farm. Siemens Gamesa’s order has a 25-year full-scope service agreement.

Siemens Gamesa Onshore business unit CEO Lars Bondo Krogsgaard said: “Onshore wind today offers one of the most economical sources of energy in many countries across the world.

“We welcome a new push from the UK to grow in onshore wind, which combined with firm commitments to offshore wind growth can together provide a significant boost to meeting green energy goals.

“We will work closely with Energiekontor to ensure we deliver the most competitive solution at this site in Scotland.”

The contract comes before the next Contract for Difference Round 4 renewable energy auction, taking place later this year.

A Siemens Gamesa statement describes its 5.X platform as offering one of the highest power ratings in onshore wind. The turbines would have a rotor diameter of 155m and a flexible rating capability to 6.6MW. The deal is also the first for the platform in the UK.

Launched in April 2019, the 5.X platform has major contracts to supply wind farms in Sweden, Brazil, and Finland. It has recorded more than 2.3GW in sales.

Krogsgaard further added: “While many business sectors have been significantly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the renewables sector has shown remarkable resilience.” Krogsgaard further added: “While many business sectors have been significantly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the renewables sector has shown remarkable resilience.”
