Siemens and EPG Alliance to Advance Smart Grid Management

AI Summary

Siemens has entered into a global strategic alliance with the Electric Power Group (EPG), based in Pasadena, USA, bringing together the companies’ respective capabilities in grid automation and advanced analytics. The partnership combines Siemens’ global grid automation expertise with EPG’s cutting-edge analytics to develop an intelligent solution aimed at strengthening grid resilience. As part of the collaboration, EPG’s synchrophasor technology and Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS) will be integrated directly into Siemens’ power automation portfolio. The integration is designed to help utilities and grid operators worldwide manage increasing grid complexity, streamline operations, and strengthen grid stability and resilience. The collaboration also supports the development of smart grid management capabilities by giving operators access to more precise and comprehensive information about grid conditions.

Advanced Monitoring for a Changing Power Grid

The ongoing energy transition is rapidly changing the way power grids operate. Variable renewable generation and dynamic loads are creating challenges that require power systems to complement traditional Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems (SCADA) with more dynamic and precise approaches to grid management. EPG’s technology addresses this requirement by using high-speed, time-synchronized data to deliver a real-time and comprehensive picture of grid behavior.

Synchrophasors provide highly precise, GPS-synchronized measurements of voltage and current waveforms, recording both magnitude and phase angle multiple times per second. EPG’s WAMS technology collects and processes this information from numerous points across the grid, creating a dynamic, holistic, and real-time perspective of the entire power network. This capability is central to smart grid management, allowing operators to gain greater visibility into changing grid conditions.

Benefits for Utilities and Grid Operators

The joint solution is intended to provide benefits to transmission and distribution system operators (TSOs and DSOs), energy companies, and operators of critical power infrastructure. Improved grid stability through real-time monitoring is among the key advantages, while faster fault detection and response can help reduce the risk of downtime.

The solution also provides enhanced situational awareness for grid operators, supporting more informed management of grid conditions and operations. Through the integration of synchronized data and automation solutions, the alliance further strengthens the role of smart grid management in addressing the complexity associated with modern power networks.

Scaling Grid Intelligence Advancement Gobally

“This collaboration represents a significant advancement in grid intelligence. Precise, synchronized data acquisition via EPG – integrated into our automation solutions – enables enhanced transparency and improved predictive control. This is a key element of a resilient, self-optimizing grid of the future that not only manages the complexity of the energy transition but actively shapes it,” said Bernd Meyer, Vice President of Research & Development at Siemens Smart Infrastructure.

“The partnership’s long-term framework agreement enables a standardized and scalable deployment model for projects across the globe. The open and interoperable design of the WAMS architecture ensures seamless integration into existing grid infrastructure, providing a scalable solution for both regional and national grids,” said Vikram Budhraja, CEO of EPG.
