Goldwind to supply turbines for Penonome wind farm in Panama

AI Summary

Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology, through its US subsidiary Goldwind USA, has secured a contract from InterEnergy to provide 86 2.5MW permanent magnet direct-drive (PMDD) turbines for the Penonome wind farm in the province of Cocle, Panama.

According to Goldwind, the order for the 215MW wind farm is the largest international sale to date. Goldwind USA has also signed a long-term maintenance contract with InterEnergy for the Penonome wind farm.

Goldwind USA CEO David Halligan said that this sale is further evidence of the strength and technological advantages of the company’s 2.5MW platform and highlights its established track record of developing strategic relationships with key customers and local partners in each of the markets it serves.

“Goldwind is pleased to have completed this sale to InterEnergy Holdings and to assist in bringing clean and cost-efficient energy to Panama. A deal of this size with a well-respected partner like InterEnergy, which is backed by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation, speaks volumes to the efforts of our team and to the validity of our PMDD technology,” Halligan said.

Goldwind has developed the 2.5MW PMDD turbines for high-power generating efficiency, superior-power quality and grid code compliance. The 2.5MW wind turbine has been designed as a smaller and lighter successor per MW to the conventional geared 1.5MW turbines.

The turbine was designed with a single bearing for a smaller physical structure. The permanent magnet generator eliminates the need for electrical field excitation and resulting electrical losses.

With its permanent magnet direct-drive design, the turbine reduces the number of high-speed rotational parts and avoids the sources of expensive faults that require crane mobilisation. These turbines significantly reduce maintenance and total operating expenditures, Goldwind claims.
