ABB Taps LevelTen Energy for Clean Energy Procurement

AI Summary

To enhance its advisory services and carbon reduction capabilities, ABB has entered into a strategic partnership with LevelTen Energy, making a minority equity investment in the clean energy transaction platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

LevelTen Energy operates a specialized transaction marketplace that connects buyers and sellers of renewable energy. The company has facilitated over 20 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy transactions spanning more than 35 markets in North America and Europe. Its platform supports a range of clean energy procurement mechanisms, including power purchase agreements (PPAs), capacity, powered land, energy storage agreements, energy attribute certificates (EACs), and granular certificates.

Combining Electrification Expertise with Marketplace Infrastructure

The strategic collaboration pairs ABB’s domain experience in electrification, digital tools, and energy management with LevelTen Energy’s transaction infrastructure to aid in clean energy procurement process. The goal of the collaboration is to provide commercial and industrial clients with end-to-end services, spanning energy procurement, system optimization, electrification, emissions reduction, and ongoing environmental reporting.

As corporate decarbonization strategies evolve, organizations face operational hurdles in structuring long-term renewable energy contracts. ABB noted that LevelTen Energy fills a key component in its existing service portfolio by simplifying how corporate buyers identify and secure clean electricity through structured agreements.

Additionally, corporate energy strategies are transitioning from annual renewable energy matching toward hourly and location-based alignment between energy consumption and generation. Addressing these needs often requires integrated technologies, such as microgrids, battery energy storage systems, and advanced management platforms—areas where ABB maintains core expertise—complemented by LevelTen Energy’s contracting and certificate trading platform.

Strategic Expansion and Venture Investments

Through this partnership, ABB gains access to LevelTen Energy’s network of project developers and clean energy initiatives, opening avenues to offer ongoing monitoring, system optimization, and asset lifecycle services. Conversely, LevelTen Energy stands to leverage ABB’s global corporate reach across industrial, manufacturing, and commercial markets, with potential growth opportunities in regions such as Asia-Pacific.

The transaction for clean energy procurement was completed through ABB Electrification Ventures, the venture capital division of ABB’s Electrification business unit. Since 2021, ABB Electrification Ventures has deployed more than $110 million across 18 start-ups. It forms part of the broader ABB Ventures platform, which has directed over $500 million into emerging companies since 2010 across the automation, motion, and electrification sectors. ABB also cited its recent investment in Gridcog as another element of its broader expansion into energy advisory and carbon management services.

Founded in 2016, LevelTen Energy delivers transaction infrastructure, transaction software, market intelligence, and market data solutions for utility-scale buyers and sellers in the clean energy industry.

Leadership Statements

“One important piece missing from the solutions we provide today: a straightforward way to secure long-term clean energy at the right price. LevelTen Energy brings exactly that capability. Through the partnership, ABB will be able to extend its growing energy and carbon advisory services portfolio with renewable energy procurement capabilities, helping customers move from planning and implementation to ongoing optimization and reporting,”
said Stuart Thompson, President of the Electrification Service Division at ABB.

Bryce Smith CEO of LevelTen Energy, said, “This strategic partnership will generate new clean energy solutions, allowing ABB’s global customers to seamlessly tap into clean power, capacity, and portfolio management tools. Together, we have a real opportunity to help even more customers decarbonize.”
