On November 8, during the COP27 climate meeting in Sharm El-Sheikh, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt reached an agreement to build one of the largest onshore wind farms in the world in Egypt.
The agreement was signed in front of Egyptian renewable energy developers Infinity and Hassan Allam Utilities, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the UAE President, to create a 10-gigawatt (GW) onshore wind project.
Egypt’s 10-gigawatt onshore wind project will eventually generate 47,790 GWh of sustainable energy each year, according to WAM, the state news agency of the United Arab Emirates.
According to Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, chief executive officer of Masdar, with this agreement to develop the largest ever project, Masdar is proud to bolster their contribution to Egypt’s renewable energy objectives while bolstering their partnerships with Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities and building on their relationship with the Egyptian Government.
As per WAM, the wind farm will help Egypt save an expected EGP 125 billion (USD 5 billion) a year on natural gas expenses and contribute to the creation of almost 100,000 jobs. According to Mohamed Mansour, chairman of Infinity Power, the project will enable the country to save vast amounts of natural gas; thereby attaining economic growth, reducing carbon emissions, and providing greater access to renewable energy sources, enabling Egypt to move forward in its journey towards becoming a green economy.
The UN Climate Change Conference 2022, also known as COP27, is being held in Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh and intends to express solidarity against the grave threat of climate change by bringing together more than 40.000 people from government, commerce, and civil society organizations. In 2023, the UAE will play host to COP28.
