UK to Expand Offshore Wind Leases to Boost Clean Energy

The United Kingdom is preparing to unlock a significant new phase of investment in its clean energy transition, with its seabed manager Crown Estate outlining plans for a fresh round of offshore wind leases expected to launch next year. The initiative is designed to accelerate deployment across the country while delivering widespread economic and employment benefits. As part of this effort, the seabed manager has already begun engaging with the market ahead of Offshore Wind Leasing Round 6, which is scheduled for official rollout in the first half of 2027. This upcoming round of offshore wind leases is being positioned as a key step in strengthening Britain’s energy security and industrial growth.

According to the Crown Estate, the new leasing round could support capacity of around 6GW or more, with a strong focus on sites located off the North East of England. These areas are particularly suited to fixed-bottom wind installations, though final decisions will depend on ongoing stakeholder engagement and alignment with the National Energy System Operator’s strategic plans for energy generation and electricity networks. A programme of this scale, centred on offshore wind leases, could generate up to 10,000 direct jobs while contributing more than £12 bn to the UK economy. The offshore wind sector already plays a central role in the country’s energy mix, producing enough electricity to power the equivalent of half of all UK homes, while attracting billions in investment and supporting a broad supply chain.

The regional dimension of the expansion is also gaining prominence. Energy Minister Michael Shanks is expected to meet with the Crown Estate, local leaders and business representatives at the Port of Blyth to discuss the transformative potential of offshore wind for communities in the North East. The Crown Estate has indicated that the majority of new sites under these offshore wind leases will likely be concentrated in this region, widely regarded as the birthplace of the UK’s offshore wind industry. Precise locations and project parameters will continue to evolve through consultation with stakeholders, ensuring that environmental considerations and industry needs are fully addressed.

Looking ahead, the UK’s offshore wind pipeline remains among the largest globally, with nearly 17GW of installed capacity and a further 12GW currently under construction. Additional seabed opportunities have also been identified across the South West, Wales and other regions, which could feed into future rounds under the Marine Delivery Routemap. As the Crown Estate advances discussions with industry, environmental groups and other stakeholders, the structure and scope of these offshore wind leases will be refined to ensure they align with national priorities and market requirements.
