Largest Wind Farm in Austria Comes Up at Burgenland

Burgenland has initiated the largest wind farm in Austria, based at Neusiedl/Weiden, with 23 turbines that total to around 122 MW.

The facility is all set to generate 251 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, confirmed the state.

Hans Peter Doskozil, the governor, said that the output can supply almost 70,000 households and at the same time roll out a fixed electricity price of 10 cents per kilowatt-hour, and that too for 20 years across the Burgenland Energy Independent Fan Club.

He went on to add that this largest wind farm in Austria indeed marks the next significant step when it comes to the objective of Burgenland so as to attain net energy independence by the end of this decade and also in a way serve as a flagship aspect of the Project Tomorrow initiative.

Peter Hanke, the infrastructure minister, went on to explain that Austria happens to depend on electricity imports at the time of the winter season and said more wind generation is required so as to support the supply security.

He went on to add that the investment does promote domestic power production and simultaneously safeguards the regional economic value.

Stephan Sharma, Burgenland Energie chief executive, said that “At this site, we dismantled 44 old wind turbines, fully recycled them, and erected 23 new, improved ones. The number of turbines was halved, while electricity production was doubled. Austria’s largest wind project is a collaborative effort, made possible only through the cooperation of federal and state governments, mayors, NGOs, and local residents and businesses.”

He further added, “There are no more excuses: This major energy infrastructure project demonstrates that we can become independent of foreign energy sources, as Austria still imports 60 percent of its energy needs. From planning to construction, we needed only about three years, creating energy independence and security for the region for more than 20 years that’s how long these new wind turbines will produce electricity for the region.”

According to him, an agri-photovoltaic park is now planned, and he opined that “the electricity from these plants belongs to the people and businesses. With Burgenland Strom, everyone can use the electricity from the wind and photovoltaic plants in Burgenland securely and independently of market price fluctuations at a fixed price of 10 cents for 20 years. Burgenland Strom participation in our wind and photovoltaic plants is available to households and businesses.”
