Taaleri, AFRY Join Hands on Onshore Wind Capacity of Latvia

Taaleri Energia has chosen AFRY in order to provide Owner’s Engineering – OE services when it comes to the construction phase of the Smiltene wind farm located in Latvia. The wind farm is most likely to generate almost 330 GWh of green electricity and is also estimated to reduce the CO₂ emissions by around 64,000 tons in every year of operation.

Notably, the Smiltene wind farm is located almost 120 kilometers northeast of Riga and is going to consist of 16 turbines, each having a capacity of 7.0 MW. The Owner’s Engineer services when it comes to this project have been awarded to AFRY by Taaleri Energia, which is a known renewable energy fund manager that has one of the largest dedicated investment teams across Europe. Taaleri Energia creates, constructs, and operates as well as exits wind, solar, and battery energy storage assets, which apparently drive the global shift to clean energy.

The services are going to cover project management, design, the review, and construction supervision across all the disciplines of wind farm construction, which includes health, safety, and environmental – HSE elements, cabling; substations; civil works; foundations; and also turbine delivery.

Adds Senior EPC Manager at Taaleri Energia, Mika Väätäjä that they are indeed pleased to accomplish their first wind farm investment in Latvia, which is a country committed to increasing the share when it comes to its renewables throughout its power generation mix. The Smiltene wind farm, when completely functional, will almost double the installed onshore wind capacity of Latvia from the present level. They very much value the professional support that they have gotten from AFRY on Project Smiltene, he says.

The wind farm goes on to mark a continuation of AFRY as well as Taaleri Energia’s partnership that began with OE services within renewable energy projects located in Finland, which now go on to expand to onshore wind capacity of Latvia.

According to VP and Head of Renewables & Energy Storage, Nordics with AFRY,  Jonathan Sistonen, they are indeed proud to support Taaleri Energia with skilled teams throughout their markets. The Smiltene project goes on to mark a major milestone for Taaleri Energia and also renewables in general when it comes to Latvia, underscoring their strong collaboration.

The wind farm is anticipated to be in operation in Q1 of 2027. The project is jointly owned by SolarWind III Fund of Taaleri and AEI, a fund that is managed by Lords LB Asset Management.

With this assignment included, AFRY now goes on to support more than 1,000 MW of renewable energy projects throughout Latvia.
