Bolivia will invest some US $ 2,560 million this year to increase electricity reserves, expand transmission lines and start the export period to Argentina, according to the authorities.

Eduardo Paz, president of the state electricity company, explained that this year three thermoelectric plants will be installed: Icona, Ambrosía and Santa Bárbara in the department of Cochabamba, central Bolivia.

He also said that this year technical studies will be carried out to build hydroelectric power plants. “One of the plants will be in southwestern Bolivia and will work in two more years,” he added.

The Central Bank of Bolivia is in charge of the financing with funds from the international reserves that the South American country has obtained in the last decade.

Luis Alberto Sánchez, Bolivian Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy, has announced that his country plans to export some 9,000 MW of electricity to Brazil and Argentina.

On the other hand, Bolivia and Brazil agreed in July last year to establish a binational technical committee to export 8,000 MW of electricity to Brazil.

It also plans to export 1,000 MW to Argentina that will be generated by thermoelectric plants in the Gran Chaco, in the south of the country. Bolivia has an internal consumption of about 1,300 MW and the surplus will be sold to neighboring countries, according to press reports.

Gas Turbines and Batteries: A Perfect Pairing
Battery systems for grid-scale energy storage is more than coming into its own as being economically viable in optimizing the performance of gas turbines.

The Bolivian state company will have to establish the prices of the electric power that will initially be exported to the north of Argentina.

Both countries agreed to build a 500-kilowatt transmission line, which will link the town of Yacuiba (Bolivia) with Tartagal (Argentina).

The second stage plans to expand this transmission line to the Argentine province of Jujuy.

Bolivia has also planned the construction of the “El Bala” hydroelectric plant in the northern department of La Paz, to generate between 1,600 and 4,000 MW of electricity.

The Italian company Geodata was hired in July last year to elaborate in two years the final design of the hydroelectric plant with waters from the La Paz and Beni rivers, in access to the Madidi forest reserve.
However, not all countries in Latin America have the same investment impetus in the sector.

The countries of Central America, for example, advance each one at their own pace and Siepac’s objectives remain on paper.

The infrastructure that sustains the Regional Electricity Market limps and the cure will take at least three more
years to arrive.

The promise of sharing at least 300 MW of energy has remained stagnant: countries such as Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras use the transmission lines of the system to distribute energy within their own borders.

The situation not only limits the ability to share electricity from other countries among them but slows down the development of new projects such as the incorporation of variable energies (solar and wind) into the market.
However, the Electrical Interconnection System of the Central American Countries (Siepac), which is the 1,800 km line through which the electric flow travels throughout Central America, only has the capacity to transfer half of that power.

All countries, from Guatemala to Panama, committed themselves in 2011 to create the necessary infrastructure to make the market efficient.

Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras, however, have not been able to electrify the majority of their population and started with a lag compared to Costa Rica, with 96% of electrification.

Nicaragua already has a plan with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to strengthen its interconnection.
The IDB, which has financed more than half of the interconnection, and gives technical support to the project, expects these 300 MW to be put into practice in 2019.
The post Bolivia will invest US $ 2,560 million for electricity reserves appeared first on Power Gen Advancement.

New data from one of the largest prospective ongoing global studies examining the use of oral antithrombotics for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF) in clinical practice, GLORIATM-AF, were presented at the EHRA 2018, the annual congress of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA).

The registry examined two-year safety and effectiveness outcomes of nearly 5,000 AF patients treated with dabigatran (marketed as Pradaxa®). Results of the completed Phase II of GLORIATM-AF,1 presented during the ‘Late-breaking science – Registries’ session, showed low rates of major bleeding (0.97%) and stroke (0.65%). These findings confirm the sustained safety and effectiveness of dabigatran and are highly consistent with the long-term safety profile observed in other real-world evidence, as well as in randomised clinical trials.

“Long-term, ‘real-world’ data are important to cardiologists as they help build a bigger picture of how an antithrombotic medication works in daily clinical practice,” commented Gregory Y H Lip, MD, Co-Chair of the GLORIATM-AF Steering Committee. “The results from the second phase of GLORIATM-AF underline the safety and effectiveness of dabigatran, which is reassuring for physicians treating patients with atrial fibrillation.”

In an additional analysis from GLORIATM-AF2 the safety of uninterrupted dabigatran for patients undergoing cardiovascular (CV) interventions was evaluated. The rates of major bleeding and stroke/ systemic embolism were very low, i.e. one major bleed and one systemic embolic event occurred in 412 CV interventions that were performed with uninterrupted dabigatran.

“From the first clinical trials such as RE-LY® and RELY-ABLE®, through to numerous real-world studies, both supported by and independent from Boehringer Ingelheim, we get an absolute, consistent picture of the favorable safety of dabigatran,” commented Professor Jörg Kreuzer, Vice President Medicine, Therapeutic Area Cardiovascular, Boehringer Ingelheim. “Recent clinical trials in specific settings like RE-CIRCUITTM,3 with dabigatran in AF patients undergoing cardio ablation, again demonstrated the superior safety of Pradaxa® compared to standard-of-care. The prospective, long-term data for dabigatran from GLORIATM-AF now add one further piece to complete this picture with profound real-world evidence.”

AF is the most common cardiac rhythm disorder worldwide, with numbers expected to rise in the coming years.4 Overall, people diagnosed with AF have a five-fold increased risk of stroke,5 which occurs when a blood clot blocks a vessel in the brain. Each year three million patients suffer AF-related strokes.6,7New data from one of the largest prospective ongoing global studies examining the use of oral antithrombotics for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF) in clinical practice, GLORIATM-AF, were presented at the EHRA 2018, the annual congress of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA).

The University of Hawai’i (UH) announced that its Maui College campus will soon be among the first in the nation to generate 100% of its energy from on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) systems coupled with battery storage. The project is part of a partnership with Johnson Controls and Pacific Current that will also allow four UH community college campuses on O’ahu to significantly reduce their fossil fuel consumption.

UH Maui College’s new PV plus storage system will be capable of eliminating the campus’ fossil fuel-based energy use when it is operational in 2019. On O’ahu, through the combination of solar shade canopies, distributed energy storage and energy efficiency measures, Leeward Community College, Honolulu Community College, Kapi’olani Community College and Windward Community College will reduce their use of fossil fuel for energy by 98%, 97%, 74% and 70%, respectively.

In 2015, Hawai’i became the first state in the country to make an unprecedented commitment to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2045. Concurrently, UH and the Hawai’i Legislature established a collective goal for the university system to be “net-zero” by January 1, 2035, meaning the system would produce as much renewable energy as it consumes across its campuses.

Of the ten campuses, UH Maui College is on target to be the first to supply 100% of its energy needs through renewable energy.

The partnership between UH, Johnson Controls and Pacific Current is the second phase of a multi-year energy efficiency and renewable energy project. In phase one, energy efficiency measures were successfully implemented at UH Maui College and the O’ahu community college campuses under energy performance contracts awarded to Johnson Controls in 2010.

Phase two includes additional energy efficiency upgrades and the installation of on-site solar PV coupled with battery storage, allowing the five campuses to use the renewable generated energy as needed. The PV plus storage systems will be developed by Johnson Controls and owned by Hawai’i-based Pacific Current. The energy efficiency upgrades will also reduce the deferred maintenance backlog at these campuses by approximately $20 million.

“With the implementation of phase two, these five UH campuses will have reduced fossil fuel energy consumption by ~14 GWh annually (45%) and added ~13 GWh renewable energy generation,” said UH vice president for community colleges John Morton. “We are proud to move the entire University of Hawai’i System closer to its net-zero energy mandate, to celebrate UH Maui College’s achievement and to position the O’ahu community college campuses within reach of 100% renewable energy generation.”

Following the successful implementation of energy conservation measures across the campuses during phase one, phase two will bring the total on-site capacity to 2.8 MW of solar PV and 13.2 MWh of battery distributed energy storage at UH Maui College, and 7.7 MW of solar PV and 28.6 MWh of battery distributed energy storage to the UH Community Colleges O’ahu campuses.

“Hawai’i’s leaders set the national example of sustainability and renewable energy standards with the net-zero mandate by 2035 for UH, and we’re proud to partner with the university to help it reach that commitment and aim for UH Maui College to become the first campus in the U.S. to generate and store 100 percent renewable energy onsite, 16 years ahead of schedule,” said Rod Rushing, president, building solutions North America, Johnson Controls.
The post University of Hawaii’s Maui College to be completely powered by solar+storage appeared first on Power Gen Advancement.

AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals, DSM, Google and Philips have started receiving power from the Bouwdokken wind farm in the Netherlands – a milestone achievement resulting from a unique green energy purchasing consortium they jointly established.

All four companies consume a substantial amount of power in the Netherlands, and by working together they are making a significant contribution to delivering on the Netherlands’ renewable energy target of 14% by 2020.

In October 2016 and January 2017, the companies signed two long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) that enabled construction of two Dutch wind farm projects – Krammer and Bouwdokken. These wind farms, both of which are located in the southwest of the Netherlands, have a total capacity of over 140 MW, enough to power approximately 140,000 households.

It is the first time that a group of multinationals in the Netherlands have teamed up to negotiate long-term PPAs directly with project developers, bypassing the involvement of an energy utility company. The Rocky Mountain Institute’s (RMI) Business Renewables Center, a leading independent authority on sustainability, says the consortium is among the earliest examples of aggregated corporate demand successfully participating in clean energy markets worldwide.

“This marks the next big step towards a new way of supplying energy for Dutch industry,” said Marcel Galjee, Energy Director at AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals, on behalf of the consortium. “We brought together a group of companies that is united in its sustainability leadership. We believe it is of utmost importance to join forces and come up with innovative partnerships to achieve the sustainability goals of our companies as well as those set out in the Paris climate agreement.”

Harry Coorens, VP Procurement Sustainability at Royal DSM added: “The collaboration and progress as shown in this initiative is well recognized outside the Netherlands. I receive questions from all over the world to explain this success story. It is a prime example to show an industry drive and collaboration that supports a mutual goal; creating a cleaner environment for people today and generations to come. Looking back historically, it’s interesting to note that this project was developed near the Delta Works, another visionary feat that is highly regarded outside the Netherlands.”

Marc Oman, ‎EU Energy Lead, of Google Global Infrastructure said: “In 2017, Google purchased enough renewable energy to match 100 percent of our consumption for global operations. Success with this consortium plays a meaningful part in our global clean energy plans, and as a company, we are continuing to push innovation for corporate renewable energy procurement.”

As a purpose-driven health technology company, a healthy planet is central to our mission, and we are making good progress to decouple economic growth from our environmental impact. All our operations in the United States are already powered by wind energy, and through this unique consortium, also our operations in the Netherlands will soon be completely powered by green electricity.

Simon Braaksma, Senior Director of Group Sustainability at Philips said: “As a purpose-driven health technology company, a healthy planet is central to our mission, and we are making good progress to decouple economic growth from our environmental impact. All our operations in the United States are already powered by wind energy, and through this unique consortium, also our operations in the Netherlands will soon be completely powered by green electricity.”

All four companies are also members of the RE100, a collaborative global initiative uniting more than 100 businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity, working to massively increase demand for – and delivery of – renewable energy.

AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals, which already sources some 45% of its energy from renewable sources, will use the green energy chiefly to produce chlorine, caustic soda and ‘green’ hydrogen at its site in Rotterdam, all essential raw materials in the chemical industry.

DSM uses the renewable energy as an addition to its commitment to purchase electricity from renewable sources to manufacture products in health, nutrition and materials and create solutions that nourish, protect and improve performance.

Google will supply its datacenter in the Netherlands with energy from the grid on which the wind farms are producing electricity.

When both Dutch windfarms are fully operational, 100% of Philips’ activities in the Netherlands will be powered by Dutch wind energy, an important milestone in the company’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2020.

The Bouwdokken wind farm is owned and constructed by E-Connection on the Neeltje Jans artificial island, which is part of the so-called Delta Works – a series of construction projects that protect the southwest of the Netherlands from the sea. Wind Cooperation Zeeuwind is a 25% shareholder of the wind farm, which consists of 7 turbines of 4.2 megawatt each.

After careful review of last week’s actions by FERC concerning transportation pipelines, Dominion Energy is reconfirming its operating earnings guidance of 95 cents to $1.15 per share for the first quarter of 2018 and $3.80 to $4.25 per share for the fiscal year 2018, as well as its 2017 to 2020 compound earnings growth rate of 6% to 8%.

The company believes that FERC’s change in policy will take years to implement and, even then, will only impact revenues on a prospective basis from the conclusion of any ratemaking process.

Regarding Dominion Energy Midstream Partners, the company does not anticipate any revenue reductions in the 2018 to 2020 time period due to FERC’s actions and is still evaluating any long term impacts and their timing.

In addition, Dominion Energy is confirming its commitment to maintain and improve its investment grade credit ratings. The company has a diverse mix of assets that provide multiple options to achieve its credit objectives while still achieving its earnings targets. These include a drop of its equity interest in Cove Point into Dominion Energy Midstream Partners (financed in public or private markets), the sale of existing assets and, if necessary, issuing incremental equity from Dominion Energy.
The post Dominion Energy Affirms Earnings Guidance, Credit Objectives appeared first on Power Gen Advancement.

Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum broke ground on the 700MW fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the biggest Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project in the world.

The start of the new project advances the UAE’s global leadership in the use of clean and renewable energy.
His Highness said that developing the UAE’s infrastructure is top priority for the leadership and vital to raising the country’s global competitiveness. “The UAE is developing a new model for sustainability and innovation and is keen to find creative solutions based on international best practices and benchmarks. The country is a pioneer in transforming its energy sector to one based on solar power and clean energy,” His Highness added.

“We will continue pursuing ambitious investments with an emphasis on projects that have a positive impact on people’s lives. Clean and renewable energy is key to sustainable development and the UAE has set an example for its rapid adoption,” said Sheikh Mohammed.

“We have developed a sustainable infrastructure that will serve new generations. This infrastructure has been built by young Emiratis who will lead our country through the next phase of growth. We are proud of our nation’s advancements in clean energy and green economy. The country is reaping the fruits today of the strong planning that we initiated years ago,” His Highness further said.

HH Sheikh Mohammed was accompanied at the ground-breaking ceremony by Deputy Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, apart from ministers, and director generals and senior officials of Dubai Government departments.

This CSP project, based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, will generate 700MW of clean energy at a single site. The project, which features the world’s tallest solar tower measuring 260 metres and the world’s largest thermal energy storage capacity, will provide clean energy to over 270,000 residences in Dubai, reducing 1.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions a year.

The CSP project will use two technologies for the production of clean energy: the 600MW parabolic basin complex and the 100MW solar tower over a total area of 43 square kilometres. This project, which features an investment of AED14.2 billion, has achieved the world’s lowest Levelised Cost of Electricity (LCOE) of USD 7.3 cents per kilowatt hour (kW/h). This is a new global achievement for the UAE.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) said: “I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for honouring us with his presence today on the occasion of this important milestone in our progress towards sustainability. This pioneering Emirati landmark has become a global model based on a vision.

It anticipates the future of a nation that sees sustainability as a life-long approach, and a basis for its progress and pioneering achievements for generations to come. President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has affirmed his commitment to continuing efforts to conserve the environment and enhance the sustainability of our natural resources. This continues the legacy of our nation’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who once observed, Our environment and the resources within it are not ours. They are simply on loan to us, and in our charge. It is the responsibility of us all to care for them, and pass them on unharmed to future generations.”

“Today’s achievement supports HH Sheikh Mohammed’s directives to expedite the pace of clean and renewable energy projects, in order to secure a happy future and enhance the quality of life for our future generations in an economy that doesn’t rely on oil, realising the dream of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, which has already become a reality. This will also achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which His Highness launched, to provide 75% of Dubai’s total power output from clean sources by 2050, and the UAE Centennial 2071, to raise the UAE’s status as the best country in the world,” Al Tayer added.

“We are guided by HH Sheikh Mohammed’s resolve and vision to achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to transform Dubai into a global hub for clean energy and green economy; establishing the Emirate as the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world. Achieving these ambitious targets will require more than 42,000 MW of clean and renewable energy by 2050. This project is one of the most important projects that will contribute to these needs. It has a planned capacity of 5,000MW by 2030, with a total of AED 50 billion in investments, to accelerate the transformation towards solar power,” Al Tayer further said.

“The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will provide Expo 2020 Dubai with a dedicated capacity of 464MW of clean energy. This will be the first Expo in the world to be completely powered by clean energy. On this occasion, I would like to thank our partners in the consortium comprising Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power and the Silk Road Fund, in collaboration with China’s Shanghai Electric as the main contractor, for their efforts and contributions in achieving our ambition to harness the sun,” added Al Tayer.

“The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is a global landmark and an important milestone on the road to sustainability that will also promote the happiness of the UAE’s citizens, residents, visitors and people from around the world,” concluded Al Tayer.

Commenting on the ceremony, Mohammed Abunayyan, Chairman of ACWA Power, said: “We are proud to be part of Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 through this project, which extends our portfolio in the energy sector in Dubai and, thanks to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, proves the success and effectiveness of implementing projects based on a public-private partnership model. We have also demonstrated the success of our mission to reduce the price of solar energy and deliver the lowest tariff by implementing Concentrated Solar Energy (CSP) at a commercial scale – thereby contributing to the reduction of reliance on traditional energy sources. The project also set multiple world records including the world’s tallest solar tower, at 260 metres and delivering the world’s highest capacity molten salt storage unit – able to provide 15 hours of uninterrupted supply even without sunlight”.

Paddy Padmanathan, CEO of ACWA Power, added: “24 hour dispatchable cost competitive solar energy that this project will deliver is not just a monumental step forward in achieving the goals of Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy but is also possibly the most significant contribution to accelerating the energy revolution across the world. The investment of USD 750 Million ACWA Power is making into this project is also the single largest investment we are making in any project and thus a testament to our confidence in the Concentrated Solar Power technology and our commitment to the long-term partnership with DEWA and the Government and the people of the Emirate of Dubai”.

“On behalf of Shanghai Electric, I would like to express warm congratulations on the groundbreaking of this project and gratitude to those who have been dedicating to making contributions in pushing forward the project. This project is by far the largest and most advanced concentrated solar power project co-developed by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and ACWA Power, implemented by Shanghai Electric as EPC contractor,” said Cao Min, President of Shanghai Electric. “It’s universally acknowledged that Dubai is a dynamic and charming metropolis and Shanghai Electric is privileged and proud to witness its boom and prosperity. We’ve sensed the trust from the client and turn it into momentum to cater to whatever the client requires us with strong sense of responsibility,” added Min.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is the largest single-site solar park in the world, based on the IPP model. It will generate 1,000MW by 2020 and 5,000MW by 2030. The 13MW photovoltaic first phase became operational in 2013. The 200MW photovoltaic second phase of the solar park was launched in March 2017. The 800MW photovoltaic third phase will be operational by 2020, and the first stage of the 700MW CSP fourth phase will be commissioned in Q4 of 2020.

The European Spallation Source for Neutron Research (ESS) in Lund, Sweden has chosen E.ON as its energy partner.

The cooperation includes energy solutions such as cooling, compressed air and the recovery of surplus energy as well as the supply of renewable energy to the large-scale research facility. The partnership is planned throughout the planned ESS lifespan, until 2065.

The European prestigious ESS project is creating the world’s most powerful neutron source. Basic research will be carried out there for a number of sciences such as chemistry, biology, geophysics and materials science. Since 2015, the ESS has been built, financed and later operated by a European consortium of 15 countries.

In particular, the research facility requires different types of cooling, which simultaneously generates heat for Lund’s district heating network. The heat generated by ESS covers 20 percent of the district heating requirements of the city’s 90,000 inhabitants. ESS and E.ON will also work together to develop resource-efficient ways of recovering surplus energy from research.

“With the concept of energy recovery, we have found an efficient solution that is tailor-made for our partner ESS and at the same time sets an example for the development of sustainable cities,” says Bernd Schumacher, CEO of E.ON Connecting Energies. “We can implement this intelligent concept because our partner ESS and E.ON are committed to sustainable energy supply and do not allow energy wastage.”

“Sustainability is one of the core values of ESS and we aim to set a new standard for big science facilities. This agreement is an important step to fulfil that goal, and E.ON, having helped us develop our energy management solution, will be an excellent partner for ESS as we seek to become one of the most environmentally sustainable research centres in the world,” said John Womersley, ESS Director General.
The post Large-scale research facility ESS chooses E.ON as its partner for sustainable energy supply appeared first on Power Gen Advancement.
